Fr. Jim came to St. Edmond's after retiring from St. Mary's Church in Rockville, Maryland. His early studies began at St. Charles Minor Seminary, Catonsville, Maryland, and continued at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. Fr. Downs was ordained a diocesan priest in Washington, D.C., on May 7, 1966.
When Fr. Jim was beginning to think about retirement and a retirement home, close friends and parishioners from St. Mary's in Rockville introduced him to Angola By the Bay and he, in turn, was able to share his love of the beach with his sister and brother-in-law who moved to Delaware two years after he did.
In addition to his love of the beach, Fr. Jim spends hours building model ships and airplanes. While Fr. Jim enjoys "helping out" at St. Michael's, Mary Mother of Peace, St. Jude, and St. Edmond's, it is the parishioners and visitors to our local churches who reap the rewards of his ministry and benefit from his abundant supply of jokes and wonderful sense of humor.
